6 tips to stay safe on an adventurous holiday

Going on an adventurous holiday is a great way to get the adrenaline pumping and make some really amazing memories. However, the thrill does come from potential risk and so it’s important to stay safe while you’re having fun. Here are six tips on how to stay safe while on an adventure.

Make sure you are insured

Travel insurance is always important, but if you are taking part in anything a little out of the ordinary, it’s even more so. Make sure your travel insurance covers everything, and that you have access to 24/7 support, just in case you need it. Hopefully you will have no reason at all to contact them, but it will help with your peace of mind (and your parents’) to know that if you need any help, someone is just a call away.

Stay away from anything illegal

This should go without saying really, but it can be easy to get caught up in the moment if you are on holiday. Don’t take anything illegal — you don’t know what they could be, or how much trouble they could get you in. Full Moon Parties in Thailand are renowned for this kind of thing and while it can be easy to get carried away, you don’t want to risk it!

Keep sun safe

If you’re off for a day of snowboarding, you might not be thinking about sun protection. However, when it’s cold the sun can cause damage, so make sure you apply some before you leave. Even waterproof sun creams need to be topped up every few hours. It’s much better to put on sun cream than to suffer for the rest of your trip with sunburn.

Do your research

When you sign up for any excursions or adventures, make sure you are going with a safe and reputable company — the cheapest option is not necessarily the best in this situation! Read reviews to make sure that they operate safely and professionally, and don’t be afraid to ask for proof of insurance or safety checks.

Keep your paperwork safe

Make sure you know where your passport, travel insurance paperwork, money, etc is at all times. Utilise the safe in your room if there is one, and try to keep copies of everything in a safe place. Make sure you have a mixture of money, cards and travellers cheques, in various different places just in case anything were to be stolen to save you being without any money.

Trust your gut

If something doesn’t feel right, or if it starts to feel too good to be true then it probably is and it’s time to make an escape. Keep your wits about you at all times, especially when meeting new people, as they could become fantastic life-long friends, or they could be scammers trying to con you, so it’s good to be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Don’t let these tips make you worry — it’s better to be safe than sorry but as long as you do what you can to keep safe you will have a fantastic time.
